“I will not teach you to be a great drawer. I will teach you to see the world.” Trenton Baylor, University of Wisconsin Professor and Sculptor.
As an artist, I am interested in sharing the imagery and story of life. I enjoy interpreting the exquisite and intriguing qualities of the flora, items, people, in my life.
In Petals and Wings, each piece has an element that is intimate and intrinsically personal, and yet the imagery is relatable. In other collections, I often do not focus on pretty work. Petals and Wings, however is meant to be lived with.
I hope these pieces share wonder and emotion, composition and contrast in a way that relates to the viewers. The titles are sometimes mysterious and sometimes a hint to the origin of the image.
Oftentimes I have a hard time settling into a single media and believe that art and artists must evolve over time the way sharks must swim to survive. So, I try new things and in the process, learn about new media and myself. I choose to be an explorer. I am a printmaker, a painter, a drawer, a doodler and writer.
The role that I especially enjoy is that of a community builder. I want to be part of a vibrant and dynamic community of artist that share their lives authentically and transparently. Most Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. I invite artists and creatives to Artist Coffee Hour in my studio, the Black-Eyed Press in Racine, WI.
Samira Gdisis is a printmaker, interdisciplinary artist, community builder, and curator from Racine, Wisconsin.
She often wonders aloud, “who gets to do this?” as she opens her studio door. “Who gets to live a life of creativity in a community filled with colorful and creative human beings?”
Samira’s art is sometimes fun and sometimes serious, often as a means of documenting life around her. Despite being a interdisciplinary artist, she returns to linoleum printmaking often to interpret the stories, people, flora, and animals in her world.
Samira holds bachelor degrees in cognitive psychology, interdisciplinary art and printmaking with a minor in arts management at the undergraduate level. She also has earned a Master of Art in museum studies from the Johns Hopkins University. She has shown her artwork locally and regionally.
